It is about his desire to be seen as a conqueror of evil, and therefore someone who cannot be challenged or questioned. Instead, for a character as single-minded and Machiavellian as Rufus Shinra, I believe his desire to stop Sephiroth stems purely from his desire to be recognised by history as the man who stood in the way of evil. In fact I would argue that it’s not even because Rufus wants to acquire access to the northern crater – which is believed to be The Promised Land – in order to harness its huge reserves of natural Mako energy. This is not for the good of the planet however. Whenever there is a scene in Final Fantasy 7 that contains Rufus, it is clear that his personal desire to find and kill Sephiroth is almost obsessive. He is unconcerned about the death of his father, President Shinra, and immediately takes on the position of president for himself.Įven though his Shinra colleagues follow him at all times and create something of an entourage around him, he often treats them with disdain, as if he has no real respect for them whatsoever. The more we see of him in FF7, the clearer it becomes that the only person he cares about is himself. The Rufus we see in Final Fantasy 7 is a ruthlessly ambitious character who is willing to do whatever it takes to increase Shinra’s global dominance and establish his own legacy as an absolute leader. In my introduction I stated my belief that Rufus is a great antagonist, and the reason why I believe this is because of how determined he is to reach his goal. Now before we get right into this, I should make it clear that I am going to be focusing mainly on Rufus Shinra as we see him in FF7 and Advent Children, rather than any of his actions or mentions in Before Crisis or Crisis Core, because obviously he has a bigger role to play in the main game and that is where we get a better insight into his character. Rufus Shinra: determined to reach his goal In this character review I am going to be focusing on the latter – Rufus Shinra – and explaining what I believe his motivations are and why, in my opinion, he is such a brilliant antagonist, so make sure you keep reading until the end.Īnd, as always, if you enjoy this post, please hit the like button below, along with the subscribe button next to it and that notification bell too, so that you are the first to know whenever a new Final Fantasy blog is posted. The above description came from Delaina Romee', and was edited by yours truly. And in the case of Final Fantasy 7, the game benefits from having not one, not two, but three great villains. "A good son would know" is what Rufus told Kadaj removing the cloak and throwing "mother" off the top of the building that they were standing on. This makes Rufus seem like a liar as all along he told Kadaj (the leader of the gang) he had no idea where his "mother" was. Mother appeared to be an odd green liquid which I think was called Jenova. In the movie, Rufus (though you don't know until the end) was hiding "mother" from the three remnants of Sephiroth: Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo. At the end of the movie he is healed by the life stream (I think) and the rain when Cloud kills Kadaj. Rufus earlier in the Advent Children movie had the geostigma, a disease that quickly spreads around the town, along with Cloud, Denzel, and others. Later in the movie he removes his cloak and has bandages covering his body. In Crisis Core Rufus (when his father died) got into an exposition explaining why in Advent children he is in a wheel chair with a cloak. Rufus became the president of Shinra after his father passed away.
