![]() ![]() Arcade provides a scheme that allows you to simplify your controls to a few basic buttons, or a standard scheme that lets you use controls similar to those found within Madden. ![]() The gameplay within NFL Arcade also leaves a bit to be desired thanks to the control scheme and the lack of features. Unfortunately, turning it off highlights the clearly dependent nature on the unrealistic powers, so the feature is a bit of a catch-22. It's entirely possible to play downs or entire possessions without a single game changer, but the problem with this extended sequence of denied power-ups makes it seem like their inclusion is particularly unbalanced. I've played games where the AI suddenly acquired two bonus plays for extra downs back to back or games where my score was swapped with the losing computer's score three separate times. However, the computer has a tendency to miraculously acquire some of the more effective game changers, particularly if it's behind on the scoreboard. Instead, your team will randomly have a chance to acquire a game changer at the start of each down. You also can't stockpile game changers, collect them based on your play or gain items on the field. Powers can only be triggered after a play has been selected, and can only be held onto for a four-down sequence. These include freezing one enemy in his tracks, adding your entire offensive or defensive line on the field or adding decoy balls during a pass play. The break in this monotony comes in the form of Game Changers, thirteen separate powerups that can completely change the action on the field in surprising ways. Concussion or not, you've got a limited set of plays in Arcade. However, the downside comes in the fact that there isn't a lot of depth as far as the plays are concerned – in fact, there are only about seven plays that you'll have available to your side on offense, which becomes both predictable and particularly boring to execute. To a degree, this helps to foster a faster style of play than your typical Madden match, as you'll constantly attempt to exploit holes in your opponent's defense to score and try to shut down receivers before they can get big yardage gains. The first team to thirty points wins, although this and other options can be adjusted. At the start of each down, you select from a running play or a short, medium or long passing play, with pass coverage for those three plays or a blitz designed to sack the quarterback or stuff the run in the backfield. You're given only four downs to reach the end zone and score by either a run or a passing play no kickers, special teams, coin tosses or penalties are included in the game. The concept behind Madden NFL Arcade is a fast paced five on five football game set on a shortened sixty yard field with the best players from the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. ![]()
